Need a car, and short of cash? Consider a used car

Money's tight for most of us right now and credit is difficult, but we still need transportation. What's the solution if your old car needs replacing?

Well, obviously, if you can't afford a new car, but you need a car that is new to you, the only option (apart from leasing) is a used car. This is a good route to follow if you're looking to economize, but you do need to follow a few tips to be sure of getting a bargain, and not something that's on its last legs - or wheels.

• Before you go to look at any cars, check with your insurer to find out rough prices for different types and sizes of car. Certain models are much more expensive than others to insure, so this could make a big difference to your final outgoings.
• Decide what class of car you are looking for, how many doors, and what fuel it should run on. There's no point in looking at cars that aren't going to fulfil your requirements - and running the risk of "falling for" something that is wrong for you.
• Take an inspection checklist along with you whenever you go to view a prospective purchase, and use it.
• Check the heater, air conditioning, windscreen wipers and screen washer work, whatever the weather is like!
• Check the price against a used car valuation guide such as Parker's in the UK, or Kelley's in the US.
• Ask to see the maintenance record, including old MOT certificates, and make sure that the mileage shown is consistent with what's showing on the odometer.
• If the car passes all these checks, ask for a test drive before you make a final decision.
